Who is the David in the Kingdom?
This is what we know about "who is the David in the kingdom?" AFTER the purification of the church.
Having abode "many days without a king" (their lot from the days of their captivity in Babylon even to this very day), "the children of Israel shall...afterward" (sometime in the future), says the scripture, "...return, and seek the Lord their God, and David their king; and shall fear the Lord and His goodness in the latter days." Hos. 3:4, 5. {8Tr:13.2}
But as David, the king of ancient Israel, had been dead for many years when this prophecy was made, and as it has never been fulfilled, he was the type of the David to come. {8Tr:13.3}
Accordingly, it is those who "fear the Lord and His goodness [the Christian Israelites] in the latter days" (our time), who shall appoint one "head" or "king"—the antitypical David.

"And their nobles shall be of themselves, and their governor shall proceed from the midst of them; and I will cause him to draw near, and he shall approach unto Me: for who is this that engaged his heart to approach unto Me saith the Lord. The fierce anger of the Lord shall not return, until He have done it, and until He have performed the intents of His heart: in the latter days ye shall consider it. " Jer. 30:21, 24. {5SC6-12:14.9}
"In the days of these kings shall the God of heaven set up a kingdom...It shall break in pieces and consume all these kingdoms." Dan. 2:44. {5SC6-12:14.10}
"Thou art My battle axe and weapons of war: for with thee will I break in pieces the nations, and with thee will I destroy kingdoms." Jer. 51:20. {5SC6-12:14.11}
These scriptures, Brother J, plainly say that God will make the seed of Jacob AGAIN a kingdom while the heathen are yet in existence; that after He has brought us into our own land as a kingdom, He will then cleanse our hearts; and that with this kingdom He will break and consume the nations. Do you suppose that God is here promising something which He either cannot or does not intend to carry out? or that He will cleanse us of our sins after the close of probation?—5SC6-12:14.9-12 (1939)
Again: from Isaiah 11 we see that the Lord is to 'set His hand again the second time to recover the remnant of His people" (verse 11), and that when He does so, He will prepare a way for them "like as it was to Israel in the day that he came up out of the land of Egypt."Verse 16. {7SC7-12:6.11}
And Jeremiah testifies that the Lord "will bring again the captivity of Jacob's tents, and have mercy on his dwelling places; and the city shall be builded upon her own heap...and their nobles shall be of themselves, and their governor shall proceed from the midst of them." Jer. 30:18, 21. {7SC7-12:6.12}
To Ezekiel, moreover, "thus saith the Lord God; Behold, I will take the children of Israel from among the heathen, whither they be gone, and will gather them on every side, and bring them into their own land." Ezek. 37:21. {7SC7-12:6.13}
The Bible is either right or wrong. If you believe it is right, take It to heart, and take your stand upon It, at least upon such open passages as the ones herein quoted, scriptures which need no interpretation. {7SC7-12:6.14}
And certain it is that no one will succeed in excusing himself in trying to side-step them, so plain and positive as they are. Neither will he succeed in excusing himself in trying to get away from God's judgments, by endeavoring on the one hand to dodge through what he thinks to be loopholes in the Rod, and by endeavoring on the other hand to set up in Sister White's writings stones to take cover behind.—7SC7-12:6.11-15 (1941)
These groups are (1) the 144,000, Israelites the first fruits of the living, whose "nobles shall be of themselves," and whose "governor shall proceed from the midst of them" (Jer. 30:21); they shall return to Jerusalem, and stand on Mount Sion with the Lamb; (2) those whom John saw, after the sealing of the 144,000, gathered from "all nations, and kindreds, and people, and tongues," during the "great tribulation," the "time of trouble such as never was" -- the great multitude who go to Jerusalem before the resurrection; (3) those who arise to everlasting life in the resurrection of Daniel 12:2; (4) those Israelites who shall come forth in the resurrection of Ezekiel 37:1-14; (5) all who come in the resurrection of Revelation 20:6; -- collectively, these are all the Israelites and Gentiles who shall return to Jerusalem, possess the promised land, and then the whole earth.—9Tr:65.4 (1942)
Jer. 30:21—"And their nobles shall be of themselves, and their governor shall proceed from the midst of them; and I will cause him to draw near, and he shall approach unto Me: for who is this that engaged his heart to approach unto Me? saith the Lord." {13SC1,2:15.6}
The nobles shall not be of the Gentiles, for they shall have their own government. {13SC1,2:15.7} (1943)
And Jeremiah testifies that the Lord "will bring again the captivity of Jacob's tents, and have mercy on his dwelling places; and the city shall be builded upon her own heap....and their nobles shall be of themselves and their governor shall proceed from the midst of them." Jer. 30:18, 21. {1An:25.3}
To Ezekiel, moreover, "thus saith the Lord God; Behold, I will take the children of Israel from among the heathen, whither they be gone, and will gather them on every side, and bring them into their own land." Ezek. 37:21. {1An:25.4}
The Bible is either right or wrong. If you believe It is right, take It to heart, and take your stand upon It, at least upon such open passages as the ones herein quoted--scriptures which need no interpretation.—1An:25.3-5 (1944)
Jer. 30:21-23—"And their nobles shall be of themselves, and their governor shall proceed from the midst of them; and I will cause him to draw near, and he shall approach unto Me: for who is this that engaged his heart to approach unto Me? saith the Lord. And ye shall be My people, and I will be your God. Behold, the whirlwind of the Lord goeth forth with fury, a continuing whirlwind: it shall fall with pain upon the head of the wicked." {1TG47:17.4}
Vol. 1 Timely Greetings No. 47 17
Their nobles shall be of themselves; that is, this Kingdom shall be self-governing under theocracy. The word "behold" calls attention to something that can be seen and therefore implies that the Lord's whirlwind is already doing its work. No wonder, then, that we are now having disturbance of all kinds, and heavy loss of life and property throughout the earth.—1TG47:17.4-18.1 (1947)
In a similar symbolism, the prophet was told that after many days of obscurity and wandering, "shall the children of Israel return, and seek the Lord their God, and David their king [evidently David is the "one head" whom they appoint], and shall fear the Lord and His goodness in the latter days." Hos. 3:5.—2TG6:17.4 (1947)

Antitypical David before the purification of the Church was Victor T. Houteff as he feeds the lost sheep of the House of Israel before the coming of the great and dreadful day of the Lord.
God does not forsake His flock. He tenderly calls them "My flock," and reassures them that He is their God. He will, without fail set one shepherd to accomplish what a multitude of shepherds have failed to do. Now is your opportunity to feast on "meat in due season," at the hand of God's chosen shepherd, or starve on husks at the hand of a multitude of shepherds.—2TG2:23.3
Yet after the church is purified God will pour out his Spirit in power and takes the 144,000 for kings and priests, all of them.

And finally, Moses' desire shall be realized
Num 11:29—And Moses said unto him, Enviest thou for my sake? would God that all the LORD'S people were prophets, and that the LORD would put his spirit upon them!
In Volume 5, pages 475-6, speaking of the 144,000, we read: "They are to be as kings and priests unto God....'These are they which follow the Lamb whithersoever He goeth'." Therefore, the 144,000 are priests, and Christ the High Priest, (and King). It may be said that when probation closes Christ takes off His priestly garments, and is Priest no longer, but there need be no confusion in this, for we read in Isa. 66:22, 23: "For as the new heavens and the new earth, which I will make, shall remain before Me, saith the Lord, so shall your seed and your name remain. And it shall come to pass, that from one new moon to another, and from one Sabbath to another, shall all flesh come to worship before Me saith the Lord." Thus we see that there is to be a system of worship in the new heaven and earth which will require Priests and Levites.—1SR:39.3
Since there is no difference between either sex in Christ, then we see that women as well as men can be kings and priests.—2SR:168.1
Asking who is David in the kingdom is like asking who will compose the 144,000.
…It is not His will that they shall get into controversy over questions which will not help them spiritually, such as, Who is to compose the hundred and forty-four thousand? This those who are the elect of God will in a short time know without question.—1SM:174.3
What we can say is that from the prophecy of Jerimiah 30 it would appear as though the "David" in the kingdom will be a corporal member of the 144,000.
Besides and in spite all of the above others still ask and want to know
Is Christ the David in the Kingdom?
Ezek. 34:23, 24—"And I will set up one shepherd over them, and he shall feed them, even My servant David; he shall feed them, and he shall be their shepherd. And I the Lord will be their God, and My servant David a prince among them; I the Lord have spoken it." {2TG2:14.3}
The self-centered shepherds against whom the prophet is told to write, are to be replaced by one shepherd, David. When this takes place God's people will THEN have but one shepherd. This, of course, cannot be Christ Himself, for Inspiration NEVER calls Him David, but rather It calls Him the Son of David. Since God's people have always had, and still do have many shepherds, the truth stands out as clear as crystal that the David of verses 23 and 24 is yet to come, and that the shepherds whom Inspiration addresses are in particular those whom David is to succeed.—2TG2:14.3, 4 (1947)
Based upon what Inspiration has revealed we can confirm with authority and dismiss the theory that Christ will be the David in the pre-millennial kingdom.

In this illustration there are three persons brought to view: Jesse (the father of David), the rod (David), and the Branch (Christ). The relationship shows that David (the rod) is not Christ (the Branch) for the "rod" sprang from the stem of Jesse, and the Branch from the rod—a fact which is born out in the cry of the multitude when Christ entered Jerusalem. They shouted: "Hosannah to the son of David." Matt. 21:15. Plainly, therefore, the "rod," coming from the stem of Jesse, is symbolical of David; and the Branch, coming from the rod, is symbolical of the son of David -- Christ.—8Tr:45.1 (1941)
"For the children of Israel shall abide many days without a king, and without a prince, and without a sacrifice, and without an image, and without an ephod, and without teraphim: afterward shall the children of Israel return, and seek the Lord their God, and David their king; and shall fear the Lord and His goodness in the latter days." Hosea 3:4, 5. "And the Gentiles shall see thy righteousness, and all kings thy glory: and thou shalt be called by a new name, which the mouth of the Lord shall name. Thou shalt also be a crown of glory in the hand of the Lord, and a royal diadem in the hand of thy God. Thou shalt no more be termed Forsaken; neither shall thy land any more be termed Desolate: but thou shalt be called Hephzibah, and thy land Beulah: for the Lord delighteth in thee and thy land shall be married. And they shall call them, The holy people, The redeemed of the Lord: and thou shalt be called Sought out, A city not forsaken." Isa. 62:2-4, 12. {10Tr:45.2}
These scriptures plainly set forth the fact that God was to scatter Israel throughout
the nations, leave them without a king or a home-land for "many days," and finally gather them one by one from every nation. At that time shall they choose David their king, and be "the holy people." Isa. 62:12.—10Tr:45.2, 3
Since, for God's honor and for the prosperity of His people, both Elijah's message and David's reign took the lives of many (Elijah's message, the lives of the apostate teachers in Israel—1 Kings 18:40; and David's reign, the lives of the heathen who defied God and His armies—1 Chronicles 22:6-8), therefore the work of Elijah particularly typifies the day of slaughter in the church, and the reign of David, the destruction of the heathen and the possession of the earth (Zech. 12:8, 9; Jer. 30:3, 9). Whereupon Christ (the son of David) shall visibly appear, take unto Himself His kingdom (Luke 19:15), and glorify it with everlasting peace (as typified by the peaceful reign of David's son, Solomon).…—8Tr:61.3
Isa 55:11—So shall my word be that goeth forth out of my mouth: it shall not return unto me void, but it shall accomplish that which I please, and it shall prosper in the thing whereto I sent it.
Jer 23:19-20—Behold, a whirlwind of the LORD is gone forth in fury, even a grievous whirlwind: it shall fall grievously upon the head of the wicked.
20 The anger of the LORD shall not return, until he have executed, and till he have performed the thoughts of his heart: in the latter days ye shall consider it perfectly.
